 HISTORY:

    "The Gun" is followed by "Mr. Spaceship," likely written in early 1952. In this story we’re at war with the ‘Yucs’ from Proxima Centauri – and losing. Our automatic warships cannot compete with the intelligent craft of the Yucs. We need manned ships but the human body cannot take the stress of space battle. The human brain can, though, and one is extracted from a volunteer and installed in the latest ship. Unfortunately, the brain has a mind of its own and prefers a new life to an old war.

    Other than its initial publication in the Jan 1953 Imagination, "Mr. Spaceship" was lost until inclusion in THE COLLECTED STORIES in 1987.
