HISTORY:
The manuscript for "Holy Quarrel" arrived at the SMLA on Sep 13, 1965 the same day as that for the ms of "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale". In May 1966 the story was published in Worlds Of Tomorrow. It was never anthologized or collected until publication of the fifth volume of THE COLLECTED STORIES OF PHILIP K. DICK in 1987.
Paul Williams, executor of the Philip K. Dick Estate and publisher of The Philip K. Dick Society Newsletter, sees the story as "one of those fascinating mid-1960s PKD stories that seem to be trial balloons -- I'll start writing this and see if there's enough going on for it to become a novel "
In his bibliography Levack includes a good description of "Holy Quarrel":
The Genux-B computer has declared a state of red alert and plans to obliterate Northern California. Frantic repairmen learn only that the computer wishes to destroy one Herb Sousa and his chain of gum-ball machines. Genux-B believes the gum-balls are alive and that Herb Sousa is the devil incarnate.
"Holy Quarrel" is an amusing story with humans trying to reason with a computer like in Stanley Kubricks movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the more obscure movie Dark Star. I waver on this one but think it deserves ô ô ô ô ô
