I have no record of a reception date at the SMLA for this story but two authorities, Andy Butler and Perry Kinman, date the ‘first part’ of THE CRACK IN SPACE to Sep 9, 1963. And as "Cantata 140" forms the first part of the novel then "Cantata 140" must be what is being referred to.

But, certainly, "Cantata 140" was accepted at F & SF on Jan 13, 1964 and was first published in F & SF in the Jul 1964 issue. The cover illustrating PKD’s story is by Ed Emshwiller.

At 22,000 words "Cantata 140" is already half a novel and, indeed, that’s what it proved to be when THE CRACK IN SPACE was published in Feb 1966. PKD said

‘"Cantata 140" is a cut-down version of a 60,000 novel, hence somewhat aborted. Oh well. So geht das Leben.’

Frozen sleep seems like a humane way to end unemployment and overpopulation pressures: Send the excess citizens to the future. Government warehouses are filled with bibs and a political fight erupts over whether or not to dispose of them through a space-warp. Then an unknown agency begins to help the sleepers to awake.{Levack 85}

What would (again I'm asking off the cuff) Ace's reaction be? For instance, in the expansion of THE UNTELEPORTED MAN, what if Ray was brought in? And his name -- despite the contract being in my name only -- appeared with mine? (this would not apply to CANTATA 140, which is written already.)
