HISTORY
The manuscript for PILGRIM ON THE HILL arrived at the SMLA on Nov 8, 1956, followed a few days later by that of THE BROKEN BUBBLE OF THISBE HOLT on Nov 13.
Not much is known about PILGRIM ON THE HILL and, unfortunately, the manuscript has been lost. About all we have are the comments of the reviewer at the SMLA, one "jb":
Another rambling, uneven totally murky novel. Man with psychosis brought on by war thinks hes murdered his wife, flees. Meets 3 eccentrics: an impotent man who refuses to have sex with his wife, the wife a beautiful woman whos going to a quack doctor for treatment, an animalistic writer with ambition but no talent. Man has affair with wife, is kicked out by husband, tries to help slob. Finally collapses, is sent to hospital, recovers, returns to home. BUT WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Try Miss Pat Schartle at Appleton.
Other than that, the records at the SMLA show that PILGRIM was rejected 15 times by the publishers of the day.
